Last weekend was Pride weekend here in Joburg. Pride parades are fun and festive affairs in any city, but this one took on special significance for me. South Africa is a country that is immensely proud of its diversity, and Joburg is certainly one of the most racially and culturally diverse places I have ever been. But it still has a very long way to go in terms of being open and accepting of gay people. Joburg does not strike me as an easy city to be out in, and I imagine that discrimination and ignorant comments would be a daily battle here for someone who is out. And so to walk through the streets of the city with thousands of people in outrageous costumes waving huge rainbow flags, dancing in sequins to disco party hits, and staking their claim in this city was a really fun and very moving experience.
I left my real camera at home, so please excuse these poor quality camera phone photos. But honestly, I was too busy dancing to the disco to take proper shots anyway.
